What's in your garden?
Hello All,
I hope you are having a great week. We start a four day weekend today and are looking forward to the family time this weekend.
We have been busy here in the Kendrick house the last few days. I finally got my big desk up and put together so once I get the computer set up at it, I will be able to work comfortably :)
Oh, look what I found yesterday morning when the kids were waiting for the bus. It is a whole bird's nest; there were two eggs.
One was cracked and the other was on the ground. I do not believe this one is viable and I do not have an incubator, but it is interesting to look at. The nest is very intricately made. It is surprisingly heavy and the grass is patched and woven together with mud to make it very solid. I believe it is a Robin's nest since we have plenty of them in this area. They like the feeder in our backyard.
Most of the work this week has been in the garden, though. We finally laid out the grid for the square-foot garden and planted the seeds yesterday.
I am excited to see the seedling sprout and eventually, hopefully have a nice harvest in a few months.
This year we planted:
Box 1:
Box 2:
Box 3:
Barrel 1: (not planted yet)
Barrel 2: (not planted yet)
Barrel 3: (not planted yet)
Herb Bed will be: (not planted yet)

I decided to do companion gardening and plant varieties of flowers/vegetables that assist each other in the growing process. The flowers help bring in pollinators to the flower producing vegetables/fruits and help pollinate them so you get actual produce on the plant.
An interesting thing I learned while researching companion gardening was about "The Three Sisters". Native Americans frequently grew Maize, Pole Beans, and Squash together in a small mound and these three plants supported each other and provided certain nutrients for each other that they would otherwise not have on their own. By doing this all 3 plants had a better harvest. Because these 3 grew so well together they gave them the name of "The Three Sisters".
If you are looking into gardening or planning a garden you might consider looking into companion gardening.
So, what is in your garden? Or what would you put in your garden if you could have one?
Let me know. I am interested in hearing the different combinations people are growing.
Have a great day!
