Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Self Defense - Part 1 (Intro)
Hello All,
I hope your week is starting off well. We had a great weekend and enjoyed a seminar at the jiu jitsu studio our son attends. The seminar was amazing and featured Bruno Bastos, who is a 4x World Champion in Jiu Jitsu and the studio is officially part of the Nova Uniao family now. This is a great accomplishment for the studio and I want to congratulate them on this big step.
The studio we attend Red River Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the owner/teacher Ben Lozano are amazing. It is a family there. Everyone supports each other and encourages each other to do their best. Eventually our goal is to have all of us, the whole family, attending the studio as students and learn as much as we can.
That brings me to the topic of today. Self-defense. We initially signed our son up because as most of you already know, he faced issues this year with racism and bullying and it really affected his self esteem. We wanted to put him in an activity that would boost his confidence in himself and teach him how to defend himself but without excessive violence or harm towards other. That is what made us choose Jiu Jitsu.
My husband has previous experience with Jiu Jitsu from his teen years and I took up the art of Tang Soo Do with Master Terry Updike for several years. I learned a lot and it helped my confidence. I have lost that and am looking for it again. That is why eventually I hope to take up Jiu Jitsu with my family and utilize it to my overall well-being.
Our son has made tremendous steps with the help of the RRBJJ family and is now more confident and stands up for himself without having to be mean or hurt anyone. Yes, there are still kids that pick on him and yes, there are still days he may come home upset but they are few and far between and when they do happen he bounces back and realizes that he is capable of great things and does not let them keep him down long.
The benefits of a martial arts class are numerous:
Health - being active in any sport/activity is good for your health. Most of us know this but not all of us do something about it. Myself included.
Self-Confidence - some people do not need any more confidence...but most have some area in their lives that they could be more confident about. It is from my own experience and seeing others that martial arts gives you a way to build confidence and apply it to other aspects of your life. On and off the mats.
Self-Defense -I strongly believe that everyone, no matter how young or old, fit or not, should be able to defend themselves to a degree. Knowing how to protect yourself is just a logical step to life preservation and to be able to protect your loved ones is a great thing. By learning defense you also go back to self-confidence because now you are confident that if something happens you have the tools to protect yourself or others. That is a great feeling.
Family - The family you can make in the martial arts studio you choose is a unique one. There are people from all walks of life but one thing most if not all have in common is loyalty. These people are there to support you in your good times and bad times. If you are struggling with a move or concept they will help you. If you are excelling they will congratulate you and inspire you to keep improving. Sometimes the family you choose for yourself is the best.
I encourage everyone to take some type of self defense class. Whether through a community center, a friend that has experience, a dojo, or studio. But I encourage you to try it. Which ever form you choose enjoy the exercise, learn new things, build self confidence, and work towards new goals.
We love the RRBJJ family and if you are in the Texoma area you should definitely come in and check us out. Also check out their Facebook Page. Tell Ben, I sent you.
I will be doing a part series on self-defense/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and if well received will be adding other things as well. The next part will be a little history on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Have a great week everyone.
