Homemade Playdough Recipe/ Challenge

Hello All,
It is Friday! I hope you all have had a great week. I must say this week has definitely been a challenge for me. It kept getting worse in worse, especially after I resolved to embrace it and fight. (Isn't that how it goes though?) But we had a slight break in the clouds and I see a pinhole of light shining through. It is enough to renew my hope and I will continue to praise and rejoice in what I have. There is always, ALWAYS something to be thankful for!

So, since I am off tonight and I have been feeling bad that the kiddos have had a rough summer and things have been stressful, I decided to pull out an old homemade playdough recipe. Up until a year ago, I made a batch or two of homemade playdough each season and colored in it seasonal colors. We have not done this in a little over a year but we always had fun doing it and I wanted to bring the kiddos some of the joy we always had doing it.

You are never too old to have fun with playdough!

The recipe is very simple and I have used it for over 7 years.

Ingredients:
1 cup - Flour
1/2 cup - Salt
2 teaspoons - Cream of Tartar
1 cup - Water
1 teaspoon - Oil (I use either vegetable or canola)
Food Coloring - of choice

1. Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar in saucepan.

2. Add water, oil and coloring. (We chose to make purple today so our daughter could split the batch with a friend.)

*Side note funny story: The first year I did fall playdough I wanted all the fall colors. Orange, dark green, yellow, red, brown, etc. well, I could not figure out how to do brown with the coloring I had on had...it was just not working so I looked in the pantry and found cocoa powder. It came out a wonderful color exactly what I wanted and smelled so good! Just like chocolate. My kids thought it would taste good and I warned them that it may smell good but it would not taste good. They were 4 and 6 at the time and both decided to taste it behind my back...lol. In unison they were spitting in the trashcan and making gagging noises. It was hilarious! But now, whenever I do fall playdough I use cocoa powder for brown just for the scent (and memory).

3. Cook about 3 minutes or until it draws away from the edges of saucepan. (Do not leave unattended! Stir often! Cooks very quickly)

4. Let cool. (I usually place it on a cutting board or surface to cool.) It looks like a hot mess right now, but will look better once cooled and kneaded.

5. Knead until smooth. (Make sure it is cool...lol...I have learned from experience the inside of the dough ball takes a little longer to cool than the outside)

You can store in a Tupperware container or Ziploc bag in the fridge for several months!

This is a very simple and quick recipe. I hope you all enjoy it.

Challenge for the weekend: Do something that you enjoyed doing as a child! Ride a bike, play in the sprinkler, pull out an old comic, draw, paint, color (in or out of the lines) anything that brought you joy as a kid do it!
It is important for us to remember what having childlike joy is like instead of dwelling on the seriousness of adulthood all of the time.

I would LOVE to hear what you did! When you do it would you mind coming back and posting to let me know how you completed the challenge? You can post here or on my FB page. Maybe it will help encourage and spark ideas in those that may have forgotten what it was they enjoyed as a kid.

Love to you all and have a great weekend,
Sharon
