Hello All,
I hope you all have enjoyed, are enjoying, or will enjoy your spring break! We just finished our spring break and had a good week.
Some exciting things are happening at the Kendrick Residence! We are making a big push towards our self sufficiency...we have been "low-key", low-scale preppers for a couple of years now but are ready to take things to another level. We will be starting our garden this month and I have just place my order for my starter set of worms! Yes, you read that right worms! We will also be starting our first small flock of backyard chickens to provide us with fresh eggs in the next few months. (Don't worry neighbors! We do not plan to have any Roo's just a group of ladies for the eggs.)

Farm Fresh Eggs! Can't wait to start our flock!

Worm's are nature's best recyclers!
In this post, I want to focus on the worms however: Raising worms for composting is called Vermiculture or vermicomposting.

Worm Castings
Worm castings (fertilizer) are one of the most beneficial additives that one can put in their garden. This natural fertilizer sells for a significant amount of money but is so easy to do on your own once you get started. The starting cost to start a worm bin is very minimal and depending on the amount of worms you have you will have nutrient rich fertilizer in a few months.
Not only will you have amazing fertilizer for your garden, but you will limit the food waste that your family throws away and help with minimizing what you put in the landfill. Worms can be fed almost anything that we eat. They even digest newspaper and cardboard and turn it into compost! The only things that I have read should be avoided are meats and dairy products...they will even eat used coffee grinds and the paper too, as well as, tea bags (just remember to take off the staple and string tags).

Ready supply of bait!
For those that enjoy fishing, you will have a ready supply of bait. How awesome is that!?! Last minute fishing trip? No problem, just grab your gear and your bait all from the house no stops at the bait shop.
When our worms get here I will post how to start a worm bin and show you how simple it really can be. I found a great "local" (Ft.Worth area) worm farm and have heard nothing but good things about them. I will review them after the whole process is done so I can give an accurate description of the whole process.
Wish you all a great day and stay dry and safe out there local friends. This weather today is much needed.
